NHL 10 Community Event Impressions
Being invited for two years in a row at the EA Sports NHL Community Event was great, and I felt very fortunate to have been able to participate at such an event. But when I got my third invitation this year I was thrilled and overwhelmed! It’s such a great honour to be one of the few guys invited, and to be able to give our feedback on the game we all love so much. It’s a great opportunity to take advantage of because beside all the cool activities in store for us, it’s just as fun to finally meet the other community leaders face to face and discuss about the NHL games. Because we all came from different places, we all had different and interesting ideas and points of view about the game.
What’s great as well is that year after year, all the attendees seem to connect pretty well together, so no one is left behind… which in the long run is what you want. I guess we’re all connected by our love and appreciation of the EA Sports NHL games!
At the restaurant
After a very interesting shuttle ride from the airport to our hotel, where our driver stepped out of the vehicle to verbally assault another driver who had cut him off, we arrived at our hotel and had to keep ourselves busy while waiting for the other participants to arrive from their long flights. Along with Robert Hagen from www.xbox-sports.com, I walked around our hotel site, taking in the beautiful Vancouver scenery and taking pictures. We walked off-site as well to get a taste of the real city. I have to say that after three years of coming over here, I’ve come to love Vancouver. Time flew by, and the first thing we knew it was time to meet the other participants back at the hotel before heading off to a restaurant called Joeys. There were some old faces and some new faces, and yet everyone got along just great. The Canucks were playing on the big TV screens and, obviously, everyone in the restaurant was cheering for their local team. Except me.
I couldn’t help but enjoy watching the Blackhawks playing because although they weren’t the local team, or my favourite team for that matter, I really could appreciate their efforts and team spirit. Chicago is a young team consisted of players who have the heart to never give up on themselves. They always give a good fight for their scores. So, in the spur of the moment, as soon as the visitor’s team scored a goal, I jumped from my chair and yelled a loud “YES!”. It was slightly embarrassing though when everyone in the restaurant turned to stare at me, but all I could do was slip back into my seat inconspicuously and start laughing with the rest of the guys at the table. Go Frenchie!! After some beers and ribs, and after the Blackhawks won the game against the Canucks, it was time to head back to the hotel to get a good night sleep before the next day which, according to Alain, would require quite a bit of our energy.

The Workout
Ok… so picture this: I am a plumber, and a farmer. I’m a small guy, but I always considered myself strong and able to do though work. Right. On day two we woke up early to go grab some breakfast at a location near our hotel, and then were driven to Twist Conditioning, where we got to experience the kind of workout the athletes do during their summer workout camps. Ninety minutes of intense drills, such as trying to run around with a parachute attached to the chest, being attached to another guy and running while the other one makes the unstoppable slow you down, and lots of more intensive stuff. It was sweaty, smelly, dirty, and even after 2 or 3 days I still felt sore.
Lucky us, we got to keep our training suits.
Meeting the pro: Zack Stortini
After our training we headed towards the EA Sports facility. Once we had all showered and ridden ourselves of sweat, we met with the game producers and, to our pleasant surprise, Zack Stortini! Now, when a hockey fan such as myself gets the opportunity to meet and talk with an athlete of the sport they watch all year round, you definitely have to take full advantage of it.
Native of Elliot Lake, Ontario, Zack plays Right Wing for the Edmonton Oilers and was drafted 94th in 2003 by that same team. He is known as an enforcer and he has proved it this year by leading the NHL with 25 fights—and of course he’s “won” all of them.
Zack is a tough guy and he spoke of the importance he felt his role meant to the game of hockey: a fight can boost the spirit of the team, if not both teams in the action of a game. Although his job as an enforcer isn’t required to put the puck in the net, he feels as important as any of the other team members. While other players might find their jobs to be scoring and chipping in in any way they can, Zack’s job is to hit hard, take the hard hits, protect his teammates and defend them in fights.
Everyone got to ask questions about his job in the line-up for the Oilers, and Zack never hesitated to answer any of them. One of the questions asked was if he thought his style of play still had its place in the NHL, and in return what he thought of the new NHL approach regarding the removal of the game fights. His answer was simple: fighting creates an energizing momentum in the game, and the fans react with excitement when they watch two individuals trying to push each other’s team over the edge. Hall of Famers such as “The Rocket” Richard, Bobby Orr, and Gordie Hoew all fought for their teammates and all brought great momentum to their games… so why take it away? Zack also stated that it would be a lot harder for guys like himself to be in the NHL from now on; they still have to be able to bring their offensive skills on the ice, otherwise enforcers won’t last long in the NHL now that the new rules have been implemented.
Before leaving, Zack gave us a few demonstrations and techniques on how to fight while wearing the heavy equipment. Luckily Joseph was Zack’s opponent. It really was more fun than anything else, and we all had a blast watching the both of them fighting each other. After a while, we took pictures with Zack and he signed some autographs for all of us. Everyone loves a good personality and Zack delivered it naturally. The whole group really enjoyed his presence at the event and I’m sure that everyone was thankful that he had the chance to swing by for us.
Thanks a lot for your time Zack and good luck with your pro career!

The masterminds behind NHL 10
It’s always great to be able to meet the guys who work on the game we all enjoy so much. Having the opportunity to chat about the game and just about anything else gave us the feeling that they do care about the fans, and that they do care about bringing important improvements to their next version. Even though they were busy, they took the time to talk with the gamers and asked their opinions on how they could improve their game. They asked us what we thought about adding this or that feature, and if we didn’t necessarily agree they asked us what scenario we had in mind instead.
Andy Agostini, Jim Armstrong, David Littman, Matt Mahar, Sean Ramjagsingh, and all the other guys making the game all took us very seriously, whether it was about NHL 09 or the upcoming game. They had their ears opened to us, and all of them were top class professionals.
Thanks for taking the time to listen to every one of us. Thanks Alain Quinto for organizing this amazing event! We wish you the best for NHL 10!

The Features:
The NHL franchise that has won 19 sports game of the year awards over the past two years begins a new era with gameplay innovations that deliver a new standard of toughness, the emotion of playoff hockey on the ice and in the arena, and over 200 gameplay refinements that replicate the skill and finesse that every fan sees throughout the NHL playoffs.
A new first-person fighting engine enables players to trade punches with an NHL tough guy. Feel what it’s like to be on the ice in the skates of an NHL player to throw and dodge punches. Grab and tug an opponent’s jersey to land a punch that ignites the fans and sparks your team to victory. Challenge a skill player and an opposing team tough guy will step in to settle the score.
On ice toughness and intimidation is taken to a new level in NHL 10 where winning one-on-one battles for possession of the puck along the boards becomes a test of will and skill. Utilizing an all-new board physics engine, players can use their body to shield the puck on the boards and then kick-pass it to teammates. Bigger, stronger players pin opponents to the boards while fanatical fans bang on the glass, just like real life. Fore-check defenders, pressure the puck and finish checks to intimidate your opponent into mistakes. Players fatigue, bobble passes, and avoid collisions under threat of constant physical pressure. Inspire teammates, ignite the fans and change the momentum of a game by instigating scrums, drawing penalties, and mixing it up — all after the referee blows the whistle!

Hey guys, it’s been a while since I made an update on the latest news touching the NHL 10 features! The wait is over I will go through the new features recap by EA Sports producers and go more in depth with other implements that’s making NHL 10 momentum to its max.
Playoffs Mode
Over the past years the Playoffs Mode was fun, but year after year the improvements were minimal. Pick a team and play it. NHL 10 changes the Playoffs Mode with new crowd interactions, the ability to select the lines before the game starts, the ability to play with injuries, and new storylines features.
Get in the crowd!
The big improvement in their authenticity is in the interaction of the fans with the game. If you often go near the boards, the fans will tap on the glass and cheer for their teams. The single glass banger is also there. When things heat up and your player gets injured, the fans will boo the opposing player to let them know of their angriness. The crowd feels the momentum of the playoffs and will with wave towels, jump off their seats, scream after a goal, boo the opposition scores, and stand alone in the crowd when their team puts the puck in between the pipes. These are all little things that make a big impact.
Fourth line makes a debut:
Over the years NHL games have forced us to start with the top line, so if you wanted to send a message to the opponent you had to wait on the 2nd shift. But we don’t live in a generation were we like to wait; we want to send the message fast and clear, total domination! NHL 10 gives you the ability to choose the 3rd and 4th line to get momentum going. But wait, this doesn’t mean that by doing so you’ll get the advantage; you still have to play smart. If you keep charging and hitting you’ll end up in the sin bin–not the best strategy to score more goals than the opposition.
Playable Injuries
This is an amazing feature that’s finally seeing the light of day in hockey games. In playoff hockey the intensity is kicked up another level where players play with sore muscle, bruises and injuries. The game lets you in control of your team lines, so make sure the decision is the right one. Hockey games have a lot of hits and players are human. If an injured player gets plowed by an enforcer it might be the end of the post season for your team mate. Pulling off a team member from the line-up might result in a loss of chemistry in your and getting eliminated after your decision is taken. I forgot to let you know the choices you can make: you can keep playing with the injury, sit him out or simply keep him on the bench.
Storyline
In the Playoffs Mode, every shift has an impact during the length of the series. Hitting a key player of the opposition will be getting a consequence back at you. While playing at their rink you will be booed, the superstar and the captain will be booed. These little things add up in the mix of the game. Before each start of a game you will know which players are currently impacts on the ice, and who is nowhere to be seen is. Use it wisely and you will be playing at your advantage.
Introducing Battle for the Cup
The latest initiative feature from EA Sports that is pretty straight forward is the option of choosing 1, 3, 5 or 7 games for the Stanley Cup in the new Battle of the Cup mode. This is awesome for the gamers who don’t like playing through entire seasons and playoffs; you can now jump right into the battle for the cup. In short, this means no long season, no post-season, just one decisive game to crown the winner. This feature is perfect for a match-up against your friends, so that whoever wins feels rewarded. In one game you will feel the intensity of the crowd, experience playable injuries, and every hit gives momentum.
But wait, the Battle for the Cup feature isn’t limited to the Stanley Cup! You can compete for the Calder Cup and all the trophies of the European leagues. This is a feature that will be used by gamers, guaranteed! Now is there a point of playing exhibition games?
Multi-player Season Mode (OFFLINE USERS FINALLY REWARDED)
Alright as you can see, EA Sports has made the possibility to have Multi Player teams controlled by gamers to up to 29 other gamers. This means that you could have the ability to gather with 29 of your buddies and set up a massive league! I’m not sure you guys will see the end of it with all the new possibilities brought into the game this year. Even though all teams are controlled, all those wicked features are there. Finally, for all those of you who can’t play online, this is the greatest news!
These three new and updated modes are certain to make hockey gamers go crazy. The authenticity and momentum were pushed to the maximum with the arrival of the improved interactive crowds, the intimated tactics and playable injuries. This is the only sports game that leaves you all the liberty in your decisions, but the outcome is never predictable so play smart, because you will find yourself on the longest losing streak that no one has ever experienced.

Spectacular New ways to score The NHL series has always implemented new features to bring the game up a notch. But year after year the way the ways of scoring was limited. Only shoot at the net seemed to be the only way to put the puck in the net. NHL 10 has finally evolve introducing batting the puck in the air... yes bat the puck just like baseball, but with a hockey stick and a rubber puck. Also remember the annoying trip on a breakaway that onceyou got tripped your chance of scoring was taking out plus you nearly ever had a penalty shot. Well those days are mostly over. If on a breakaway situation the opponent dive to remove the puck off your blade and trips you, the player will attempt to shoot if he’s still on his knees now that’s some great news. |

Improved Goaltender Intelligence/New animations The Goalies in hockey games were always frustrating to view give a terrible bad cheesy goal. Well I was probably the most frustrated of them all you might had to lead the games in scoring chance and your goalie would just give up on you. NHL 10 wants to remove that reputation of their goalies and now from what we have seen is that the goalies will make a second effort to stop the put of going into the net. Remember when you pass from boards to boards and the goalie would of split and any shot towards the net would of go in. We have seen a similar play but the goalie made a remarkable save after pushing himself back to stop the puck. Now this is great news. When goalies saves the puck and gives a juicy rebound it seemed to cover the angle of where the puck was going which is smart innovation. |

In-game facial animations The realism of the game gets to a new unreached level. Hockey games always improve from year to year. The expressions on the players face were always the same, monotone face while skating, scoring, fighting, hitting, getting hit, going in a penalty box. Well now this is something of the past. When you will shoot the puck you will see all the intensity of the player making the shot towards the end zone or the net. In a hit situation both players will have 2 different facial expressions. Funny to see in 15 years from NHL ’94 to NHL 10 game how the NHL series authenticity have developed to such perfection and so realistic. |

Styles of Play NHL delivers so many new ways to play the game, with style of play, board play, dump and chase & intimidation tactics that the every day game can compete versus the most hardcore hockey gamer out there. Lots of new great additions to the game that will make the gaming experience a lot more enjoyable especially on the online side. Let’s not forget last year, was the first year of the Be A Pro and we know it will only get stronger and bigger.

Before we all forget the producer of NHL 10, David Littman, announce a few months ago that customization of tracks into the game is now a feature for the Play Station 3. Since last year the game developers didn’t had enough time to bring it on both console. That’s just a reminder from all the emails I got in the last months.
Mid July is our next embargo lift!
Stay tuned!
Over the past years, the EA Sports NHL series have delivered in the greatest sports experience on a gaming console. NHL 10 has a lot to prove in order to continue their current streak of offering the best hockey video game on the market. We have seen many new features in the last 3 years: the skill stick, the creatable offensive and defensive plays, the online and offline Be A Pro mode. So how can the greatest hockey game get even better? Well continue to read and you will find out.
Board Play
The game of hockey isn’t always in the center of the ice; often the players will be scrambling for the puck, and the goal is to get out of that position while still handling the puck. We’ve seen this feature before in other games, but now it’s finally coming to the NHL 10 game. What we saw was the ability to pin and battle for the puck, something that was not possible in the earlier versions. This adds to strategy and creates new ways to get the puck, because hockey is all about the puck position.
First Person Fighting
The title already gives you a heads up about the feature. Previously, video game hockey fights were pretty much awful, pathetic and lame. This time, the producers wanted to change the gamers’ approach to the fighting mode in hopes of making it more enjoyable with more control options and better feedback. While we watched the producers show the new fight mode, everyone seemed thrilled about the changes. Fights in sports are rare, although hockey still lets it happen. Hockey fans enjoy watching fights and EA Sports wanted the gamers to enjoy fighting versus the computer’s A.I., a friend or an online opponent.
Intimidation Tactics
There are so many ways of creating momentum in the game of hockey, even throughout a single game. Key players being hit by grinders or goons is just one of the quick and simple ways turning the momentum around. That would explain the reason why EA Sports invited Zack Stortini to the event. He’s a pro at what he does, and he explained to us how his type of play can affect his team as well as the opponent’s team. We noticed while watching some videos that if a player hits a superstar, another player will go defend his teammate and call you to fight, or simply hit you to let you know who’s the boss. Now that’s some hardcore intimidation!
Precision Passing
Let me start by saying YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! This is something I’ve waited for since NHL 2005. Back in 2004 we had directional pass, which meant that you had to aim your teammate to make a pass. This time, not only do you have to aim to pass, but you also need to aim to shoot. It’s great to see this feature back in game; it adds so much strategy to the game rather than the old hit-the-pass-button way of doing it. Now the real skilled players will be separated from the others. We also noticed that even though you know where to pass, you will need time to make sure your pass gets to your planned destination. You have to make sure that you are cleared out of your opposition way since you need time to launch the pass. So if you don’t seem to be able to pass it, you might be obligated to keep it or dump it.
Post Whistle Action
Oh now I can see all the community boards go nuts on this feature, and they would have every reason to. In the past, NHL hockey gamers loved to hit their opponents after the whistle was blown, just because they could; it was funny to beat the hell out of your opponent after he had humiliated you on the scoreboard. Well now it’s even better! You can start scrums and fights and get penalized for bad behaviour, just like the real world. You now have to make the decision of playing smart when the play is on and when there’s a stoppage. The producers also showed us a video where if you shot at the net after the whistle was blown, you’ll pay the price.
Interactive Crowds
What do the crowds mean to us? They help us get momentum into a tight game, cheer for the best players on the ice, and boo the team when they are lacking in efforts. NHL hockey video games always tried to implement features in which the crowd was more interactive with the game; however nothing concrete was ever made that to make the game more intense. This is now something from the pass. We noticed that when the home team scored, fans would jump up into the air and celebrate, and when the opponent team scored, only a handful of fans got up in excitement. Cool eh? Is that it? OF COURSE NOT! When the players get closer to the boards, the fans will react and hit the glass.
Conclusion
With these new features, it’s clear that EA sports is still in the lead of the hockey gaming world. The game is getting so close to the real deal, that it makes us wonder what could possibly be added or done better in the upcoming years??
