Alright People! We’re back from Vancouver and have had a couple of days to unwind and get back to our usual day. We had a fantastic time in Vancouver and I(Rob) and Luc would personally like to thank Marcus for the wonderful time and the amazing hospitality. You guys made us feel more than welcome, almost like family. The hotel was incredible! Out of my budget, but that’s okay :). The gesture was greatly appreciated and that won’t be forgotten.

The entire crew was filled with good people who were all easy to get along with. Everyone was from a different part of North America, but all shared the same interests, and that was the wish of a good game and to have a good time. And that we all did. The first night when we all got together, and we all went out for dinner and drinks. But before then I woke up to Luc pounding on my door and yelling “everyone is waiting for you!” So automatically I felt like a jerk for making everyone wait. When I got downstairs, there was only about 5 or 6 people waiting...for everyone else. We went to a nice bar and grill and the food was good…and filling too. At around 10:30-11:00 Pacific time, the guys from the east started to shut down, (it was 1am eastern standard time) and I hadn’t slept in 2 days.

Friday morning started early, as we had to be down to the bus by 8:15am. We all piled on to the bus with our hockey equipment, and paper work for the EA Sports NHL 08 Easton Community Day. On the trip there, we saw some neat places like the Science Centre, learnt that there is only 1 road connecting Vancouver and Whistler. This is fantastic for the 2010 Olympics (sarcasm).

We arrived at “8 Rinks” in Burnaby, where EA Sports had everything set up upstairs in one of the board rooms. They had all sorts of juices, pops, muffins, and other breakfast foods ready for us to chow down on before heading downstairs to the rink. Just as everyone picked up their Easton Stealth stick and started taping it up, Marcus introduced us to a very special guest, Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber. We made our way down to the dressing rooms to tie up our skates and get on the ice. For the first few minutes, we just skated around to get the feeling of the ice and shoot the puck. I(Rob) was cruising around the slot and as I looked up, Shea made eye contact with me and fed me a pass right on the tape. I was so surprised by it that I hit the post on an empty net.

We got to go through a couple of the drills that are in the game, and we also had some competitions between the community leaders and I(Rob) was the fastest skater in one of the drills. Luc ran into the boards a couple of times and also fell flat on his ass in the breakaway competition, but stuck with it and JUST missed the top corner, all the guys roared with laughter. Good work Luc.

About NHL 08 ( 22nd of August,2007 )
Crashthenet.ca NHL 08 News: Alright guys you all know by now that we (Luc and Rob) have been to Vancouver for the EA Sports NHL 08 Easton Community Event and by now you should all be pretty much impatient to get our thoughts from this game. Now we all signed papers with EA Sports saying that we can't talk about certain things about the game. Unfortunately we cannot answer your questions about the game, everything you see here is all we can tell you. It's not that we don't love you guys; its just life. So the following features are those you already knew were coming but we will give you more details.

Creation-Zone

Create-a-Player:
If you are creating yourself to your favorite team, you can pick what blocker, trapper, pads, stick, and mask they’ll use. Example I could give myself an rbk blocker, and Vaughn trapper, and itech pads, along with a Bauer stick. You can mix and match, you can give your goalie the good old Tim Thomas and change your equipment to what ever you want to and it doesn’t have to match. You can also edit NHL goalie equipment. Say Thomas goes through 47 ½ sets of equipment again this season, you’ll be able to edit it as you go along. To go along with all the equipment that you can put on your guy, you can also create a face with the modeling tool in the game. You can choose your hair style, your black eyes and scars. The list just doesn’t end with the options you can use.

Player equipment is insanely in-depth this season. You can pick the players gloves(colours too), stick, stick curve, stick flex, skates, skate radius, pants whether long or shot, shoulder pads, whether big or small, helmet, visor (clear, grey, or yellow) small or the Dany Heatley special. Whether or not his tucks his jersey into his pants and if so, left, back, or right. If his socks are tucked into his skates or no. if you want to do something to your player to make him unique, you’ll have the opportunity to do so.

Create-a-Team:
This area is very in-depth as well. Besides the obvious (team name, team location, arena) you get to customize your teams uniforms from a selection of templates. You get to pick the teams colours, the stripes, the logo (again EA defaults, unless there was an import feature that I did not see). You can change the stripe colour. The standard colour of the players gloves, the standard equipment for your goalies to wear and will also be able to choose from different team fonts for your team. There is a lot of detail that goes into create-a-team as well, but sadly I cannot remember it all.

Create-a-Play:
Brand new this season. You can create a play with your favorite line on your favorite team. Like you saw in the video, you have full access to have your player’s do what you want them to do and when you want them to do it. For example: with the Sedin’s, Henrik will get the puck on the half boards. Daniel will go to the net and look for a deflection, Henrik will use the slap pass and fire one at Daniel’s stick looking for a tip. Or with Joe Thornton and Jonathon Cheechoo, where Jumbo Joe will take the puck around the net and make a cross crease pass to Cheechoo for a one-timer. If you wanted to, for a last minute of the game play, you could send 4 or 5 guys to the net to cause traffic and hopefully get a good point shot off and go for a rebound. This option also includes lines on the ice that show you where you players are going, BUT you CAN turn them off so they don’t show up during the game and this will make it look 100% authentic.

Online Mode

This year’s focus for the online gaming was to make the game feel as offline as possible. Cutting down on lag by putting more servers around North America, to keep you running smooth as possible. They also have added a ping icon beside the player’s names, red, yellow, or green. I’m sure you can figure out which is which. They want you to have the best possible experience this season and they are sure doing a good job at it.

Leagues:
That’s correct folks, this season there will be online leagues. You will be able to battle with as little as 1 other friend, or with up to 31 of them. Why a 32 team league? Beats the hell out of me. The online leagues stats will be tracked by ea sports and will be available to you through their Xbox live or through the ps3 equivalent.

Online-Team:
In this feature, you’ll be able to join your friends who are signed onto other consoles and play on their team. You can play up to 4-on-4 with the xbox360 and up to 6-on-6 with the ps3 (one guy is the goalie and cannot change.) 2-on-1, 3-on-1, 4-on-1 and so on. If you and your friends have nhl08 and Xbox live or the ps3, you’ll all be able to link together and have a blast.

Shoot-out:
Yes it is true! You can just have a shoot out online. There really isn’t much detail needed for this. It’s a 3 round shoot out where you can show off your skills and pop some beauties into the back of the net. There are 2 game types….ranked and unranked. The only difference between the two modes is that in a ranked shoot out you have to control the goalie as well as your player. This makes it more difficult but more rewarding when you get the “W”.

Quick-Play:

This mode will connect you to another user who is using the same settings as you are to get you an even opponent. This will also help your friends list grow…or might also influence some trash talking. Either way, this game has a lot of awesome features.

Dynasty Mode

The AHL:
The American Hockey League is fully playable this year. Real rosters, real player faces, real jerseys, the whole shebang. You can play all your Minor league games along with your NHL games. This means a lot more than the 82 game NHL schedule. If you recalled last season when you were looking at your schedule, you would see the logo of the team that you were playing that night. With the AHL now being in the game you will see a small AHL logo on the date.

*I just have to comment that I did not have a lot of time to look through and analyze every aspect of Dynasty mode but during some down time I did take a look and was able to sim up until the all-star game (no skills challenge =\ ) so I could answer some questions but like I said I’m not an expert on all the ins and outs. From what I saw a lot of it remained unchanged but there were some key additions that I really enjoyed. For example there is a new dynasty central screen where you can see basically everything you want to know about not only your team but the entire league including AHL. It shows standings and scores from around the league on the side. There is a bar at the top showing the games coming up and the main section shows detailed transactions – basically anything that any team does over the course of the season you’ll be able to track and find there. Which is great because I remember a lot of times being like “wtf is Sundin doing on the Canadians” we’ll now you’ll at least be able to see what the pesky computer is up to. So that was really cool to see in there. Another good thing to see was in my first e-mail there was a Salary Cap update that detailed the salary cap floor and ceiling for teams and was quite detailed even showing how much you can spend on rookies ect. My first question after seeing that was – well does it change? The answer is yes. Another thing that I absolutely loved was the way in which scouting was improved. For example you can assign scouting staff to major hockey locations around the world and then from there select what players from each country you want them to focus on. So now when it comes time to draft you might have the inside scoop on a player and be able to make smarter draft day decisions.*

Practice Mode:
When you are creating your player, you’ll be able to test the different sticks to see which kind you like the most. The curve on your stick really does have an impact on your accuracy. If you have a Bergeron curve, you’ll most likely miss the net if you are aiming top corner from the slot. If you use the Datsyuk, or the Modano curve, you’ll more than likely pick the corners. You’ll be able to test the sticks in an accuracy drill where you shoot for targets in the corners of the net. You’ll be able to nail your shots with a lot of practice and patients.

The different radius on the skates also has a large effect on your speed, your acceleration and your agility. You’ll have 3 different radiuses to choose from, each having its advantages and disadvantages. You’ll also be able to test out which one is right for you by doing and agility race where you go through pylons, around the net, and then haul ass back to the top of the face-off circle (which I won btw).

---------------------------------------------------

To sum up this write up, this is THE best hockey game that we at crashthenet.ca have played. We know that you guys and gals are going to love this game and we hope that you will continue to support us through out the season. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Special thanks to Joe “Unorthadox” Iusi from thebreakaway.net for allowing us to use his write up for Dynasty Mode. Luc and I were too busy trying out the new in game features that we over looked dynasty mode. We were so into the game that the time just flew by and before we knew it, it was time for the community leader’s tournament. Which Crashthenet.ca finished 1st, and tied for 3rd. making us the strongest NHL 08 players out there  j/k.

The Features!!!

The Gameplay: Okay, here is what you have been waiting for…NHL 08 news! I’m sure you’ve all read on other sites that this game is bringing the heat this season. And I can tell you from actually playing this game myself, all the hype is worth it.  If you want comparisons to NHL 07...umm…they both have all 30 NHL teams, Ovechkin is awesome…umm…what else…that’s about it. NHL 08 introduces a brand new skating system that is as real as it gets. Your player does not turn on a dime and maintain speed. He will either cross over like you should or will pivot on into a sharp turn and loose a lot of speed. While skating along to offensive blue line, your attacker will T-push across the blue line and will always have the puck in front of him making it seem like he is always thinking offense.

The Puck motion: When the puck is not on your players stick, it is live and anyone can grab it. Especially during dekes! If the puck connects with the defenders skate, it will bounce off and head in any direction. The bounces seem more realistic this year too, if you dump the puck into the zone and the puck is spinning end over end, it may bounce into a different direction and catch the defender off guard.

Speaking of the defender: The computer AI this season is incredible! You will no longer be able to go end to end and cut across the slot and look for a one timer again and again. The cpu will adapt and will force you to do something else. The cpu will pressure you as soon as you cross the blue line, force you into the corner, or take away your cross ice pass. The same thing if you are on defense. If you make a mistake, the cpu WILL make you pay. And they’ll force it down your throat until you realize what just happened. The CPU may just be the smartest AI in a hockey game to this date.

Creation zone:…this part is so awesome, that I can’t tell you anything until the middle of the month…sorry

Dynasty mode:…same thing

Online Features: Online this year is pretty cool too some new features that I can’t tell you about either! HOLY CRAP I can’t tell you anything.

Deking System: Deking this season is brand new. You still control your stick with the right analog, but this season you can push the puck around, or through the defender and jump one way or another around him. There is no guarantee that it will work though! If the defender has position on you, he will guide you away from the puck, knock you on your butt with a hip check, or just stand you up. You also can’t pull off these moves with just anyone. If the don’t have great puck control, they will more than likely loose control of the puck and have to fight to regain possession. But if you pull it off with Crosby, or Ovechkin, you’ll make it look very pretty.

Improved AI: This year the AI helps the goalies to predict one-timer shots and stop attempts at the net with their stick. The CPU players' improved logic makes puck handling and on-the-fly line changes easier. If the goaltender’s view is blocked by a player in front of him, he will try to peak left or right to get his eyes on the puck and stop you. Also the CPU players will make better decisions with their defensive play; if you always pull a pass to one of your defense players the first two times.... forget it for the third time.... he's going in to take it away and make you look like a complete idiot.

New controls for Goalie: Well this is the fun part if you always wanted to be a goalie but never wanted to get hurt, well Goalie control in the NHL 08 game is just for you. When controlling your goalie you have to save the shots at the real speed of the game, not slow-down like 2K Sports. Real speed is much better. With the new feature they also have tweaked and fixed issues from last year title. When you slide your goaltender he wont go from the right post to oops outside of your net and SCORES!!! This year the goalie control stays in his crease, unless you press the vision control button to get the puck in front, side ways or behind him. Goalies also move much faster but still are very realistic. The goaltending doesn't give floater goals. The goalies knock those into the corners or cover up right away. If you are manually controlling your goalie, he will not slide out of the crease by flicking the left joystick like last season. It is pressure sensitive and depending on how hard you press it, the goalie will move accordingly. A new feature this season is the goalie mode, where you get to control the goalie from the goal judges point of view. It brings a totally new feel to the game and puts you behind the mask. Now you know how the goalie feels when Dany Heatley is winding up and firing a slapshot at you.

NHL Jerseys: This year the National Hockey League is having a huge marketing hit by introducing new Jerseys for all 30 teams. Now all the Jerseys will be available in NHL 08 although the ones yet not release will be available to unlock from the EA Sports and Reebok web site. At crashthenet.ca we will also let you know about this information so no worries about those new jerseys that everyone wants to see with big expectations!

AHL Teams: As you all know by now, the AHL teams are included in this game. Lets just say that this was pretty well done, all play-by-play name and some players’ faces are in the game. All the new Jerseys of the AHL will be in the game when it's release if not you will have to get a code through EA Sports or Reebok web site to unlock those but remember you don't need Xbox live to get them.

Level of difficulty: Well last year this feature was pretty much a joke and I’m saying it this way to stay respectful towards EA Sports. For this NHL 08 they meant business; if you try to do a one timer every time you enter the opposite team’s zone they will intercept you and make you look like a fool. The game developers have conceived the game to be more creative so never do the same play repeatedly because if you do... well you're not gonna win a lot of games on the Superstar mode. Now you’re probably saying well you guys played 1 on 1.... we actually played 2 on cpu.... and we lost 7-2 and they had the puck pretty much all the time.

The communication: The communication in multiplayer mode is directly from real hockey - ask for an assist by tapping the ice with the stick. Well to be honest I didn't really check out that feature so I will have to wait until I get the game to find out.

Renewed skating engine: Well this makes the game as realistic as you could ever imagine! If you push your left trigger a little bit your player will go slow towards the direction you pointed out. Its possible this year to skate side ways, which is good if you are controlling a defenseman at that point. This makes it the game of the year just for the introduction of that new feature and I’m not bluffing it's awesome!

New 30 practice drills: Yeah and I sucked at pretty much all of them .... NEXT!!!

The skill stick: This year they added new controls, which brings the game up to another level. The stick will help you get away from a player pretty fast but you got to be careful how you use it.

Back to the New 30 practice drills: This is a neat feature of the game. I won't say much for now but I will tell you this: it's pretty fun. You can do all the same drills you would of do with your junior coach to improve your skills. Now I’ll stop here for now and wait to get more info about it because I don't feel like telling you lies for this.

Thanks to Electronic Arts of Canada!!!

On behalf of everyone that was invited to the EA NHL EASTON Community Day we would like to thank the following people and companies that made our stay in Vancouver the best it could be.

Marcus Stephenson:
Luc: He is the reason why those two days were a complete success from beginning to end. He was a funny guy and knew when to act professional when you had too. We hope to get the opportunity to meet up with you next year as well! Rob and me have only great words for you and wish you the best in the future!

Rob: I would personally like to thank Marcus and EA Sports for the opportunity of a life time. I’ve always wanted to go to British Columbia and this was incredible! I would love to have the opportunity to represent crashthenet at the EA Sports NHL Easton Community Day again.

Alain Quinto: Well that’s another great guy that we saw a lot and who is quite fun to have a chat with. We appreciate the exclusive content you guys sent to all the community and it has already paid off on the NHL community! Millions of thanks again!

David Littman: The producer of NHL 08 was very friendly and open to all questions asked. This guy knows what he’s talking about and everyone was glad to take the opportunity to talk with him.

Shea Weber: 22 year old Nashville Predators defenseman was a classy guy and was easy to talk to. We appreciate you signing everyone’s new Easton stick and wish you good luck on the upcoming season with the Predators.

Easton Hockey: We would also like to thank Easton for giving everyone the new hockey stick Stealth CNT that is valued at $300, and the t-shirts with the key chain! We appreciated the gifts greatly as well as the time you guys gave us.

Craig Gonzalez: Well he was one of the invite but he's the one responsable for the Community boards for all the NHL Gaming Leaders to be reunited. This made things much easier for all of us, I just wanted to make it public for the help you brought us. Thanks again Craig!

All the following links are the Community Leaders sites that were represented in Vancouver. More info will come soon with who was representing which web site. So we hope that you guys stay tuned for more information. We are please at crashthenet.ca to be your #1 choice for all the NHL Gaming information.
